It was all hands at work and all smiles on faces, including that of the Toowoomba Regional Council Deputy Mayor Cr Rebecca VONHOFF, when members of the Lions Club of Toowoomba Wilsonton took part in their regular “Eat Up” Australia service project.
Members of the club get together twice each school term to make cheese sandwiches which are then distributed to schools in the Toowoomba Region. These sandwiches are distributed by school staff to children who arrive at school without having had breakfast or with insufficient food to sustain them during the day.
“Eat Up” is Australia’s only organization providing free lunches to vulnerable students on a national basis. At each activity, our club makes in excess of 600 sandwiches. The collaboration between Eat Up and our Lions Club is one of understanding and reliance on each other. Compassion is at the centre of both Eat Up and our Lions Club.
On our most recent sandwich making day we were joined by Deputy Mayor Cr. Rebecca VONHOFF who participated in sandwich making duties and enjoyed the chance to chat with our members … to learn a little about what we do in our community, as well as nationally and internationally. Over recent months, this project has attracted other members of the community who now regularly attend and assist.
Rebecca VONHOFF said “I enjoyed working alongside Lions members and being part of this hands-on project which is so vital for our vulnerable young people. It has been great to meet all of you and know more about all the work you do to help our communities.”
Following the project, members thanked Rebecca for her interest in our Club and for her assistance and invited her to join us again.
